Reading a book
There is a story about a man who read a book. As the book was handed to him all eyes were focused upon him. This wasn’t unusual for a teacher to read from a book, especially this book. And it wasn’t unusual for a teacher to read from this particular section of the book because this was one of the most popular reads of the day. This was a book that talked about hope, about the future when things would be different, when things would be made right. Perhaps those in attendance thought, “oh, I hope he talks about how good it will be… someday.” Who doesn’t want to hear about what good could come our way? But then the teacher shocked everyone with what he said next… “What I have just read… what you have just heard… it is coming true today… right now... right here.”
What?! Today? Today there is good news for the poor? Today there is freedom for the prisoner and recovery of sight for the blind? Today the oppressed are set free? Today is the day that God acts to make things right? Today?!
Today we are beginning a partnership with Chenowith Elementary School because we believe that Jesus is inviting us to be active participants in the good news. There are great needs at Chenowith... but God is already moving there and the good news for us is that we get to be a part of it, that we will encounter Jesus and that we will be set free as we serve.
So how do Presbyterian’s take a step towards freedom? Well we have a meeting of course… Wednesday, August 3 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at Gateway (childcare will be provided). Come to find out more about our Chenowith partnership and how you can get involved. We need people who can organize, people who can chaperone, people who can assist teachers, people who can serve snacks, and people who can read books because we know that amazing things happen when someone stands up to read a book…
